2nd Obso-Days - Obsolescence and Innovation Days “In-Service Support and Obsolescence”

The 2nd edition of the "Obso-Days" workshop will be held in a particular context. We are going through a health crisis unique in the history of humanity with many unexpected consequences. On the logistical level, the blocking of the Suez Canal on 23 March 2021 has generated disruptions of unsuspected magnitude in the logistical chains. The temporary shutdown of some electronic component manufacturing plants combined with the unprecedented demand for electronic products has created delays unique in the history of modern industry.

We are also witnessing a global awareness of environmental, societal and sustainability issues. Consumer-citizens, industrial customers but also public authorities are changing or seeing their needs and requirements differently. Extending the life of products and systems, reuse, remanufacturing and retrofitting are becoming more important in the collective consciousness.

Systems with a (very) long service life (several years to several decades for trains, aircraft, etc.) require In-Service Support (ISS) throughout their life, before final withdrawal. The two main components of ISS, technical and logistical support, involve numerous management operations whose execution is challenged by component obsolescence.

Thus, the main theme chosen for this 2nd edition of the Obso-Days workshop is "In-Service Support and Obsolescence". The objective is to establish a fruitful exchange between obsolescence practitioners in companies and researchers in obsolescence and related fields in order to enable the identification, understanding and analysis of the dependencies between the two fields. The event also features the railway and defence industries.
